Internet Service disrupted in UAE

Wednesday, August 03, 2005

Imagine not being able to log on to the Internet and being able to check your email or even surf the web casually ? Something of that severity has come upon UAE.

Underwater cables acting as a telecommunications link and Internet backbone was damaged somewhere between Mumbai on the west coast of India and Penang in Malaysia.

The nation's leading telecommunications company Etisalat commented that a ship might have ruptured the cable and it had no idea when the matter would be resolved.

However complete suspension of services is not expected as only some pathways would be affected. Eg. An end user could visit a site located in USA but service to an Asian site might be interrupted.

Reduction in total bandwidth has not been estimated as well.

  • No estimated fixing date provided.......

The cable that runs to Dubai is like 3500 kms long and they will have to scrutinize every inch of it to find out the defect and then work on fixing it.......

Could be weeks or even months !!
