Week of Mourning in UAE

Tuesday, August 02, 2005

Following the sad demise of King Fahad bin Andul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, who died yesterday the President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered seven days of mourning.

Flags at all government departments and the UAE embassies abroad will fly at half mast during the period.

The Saudi monarch had been in and out of the hospital in recent months, most recently suffering from pneumonia-like symptoms. Fahd yielded day-to-day control of the kingdom a decade ago after suffering a stroke, with Crown Prince Abdullah serving as the de facto ruler since then.

Fahd assumed the throne on June 13, 1982, becoming the fifth king of Saudi Arabia. He was the son of King Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud, the founder of the modern Saudi Arabia.

However he was known to be a very lavish person and is featured in the book Daughters and Daughters of Arabia (a definite read) and was known to spare no expense for his personal leisure. A small example can be seen from the picture below of his guest salon at his palace,
